Introduction

Microsoft Word is a very powerful word processor. Not only can it check spelling in English but the entire program can change into the language of your choice. It is very easy to make these switches.

Note: It may take a couple of seconds while the computer installs the foreign language software.

To Change the Language

In the bottom right hand corner of the screen there are two little button's that look something like this: (buttons may not look exactly as shown)

It may be two different letters such as FR if the language is set to French. To change the language just left-click the buttons and select the language you wish. You can change back and forth between languages this way in your Word document.

If you choose a language with a different character set the keyboard will change to reflect this.

To Change the Dictionary

You can change the language that the computer checks your work in. To perform this operation click
Tools -> Language ->Set Language.

Then a window will pop up asking you which language to choose. Simply scroll through the list and select ok in the language you would like.

Translator Tool

Microsoft Word also has a built in translator. To access that make sure that "Translate..." has been selected.

Then this sidebar will appear.

You can:

  • Type text into the field
  • Translate a selected section of the document
  • Translate the entire document

<- Use the drop down Dictionary menu to select the language you wish to translate into.
