The medallion was a collaboration between Victoria University and the Northrop Frye Centre, and was designed by Canadian sculptor Dora de Pédery-Hunt. The image of the medallion was used on the cover for the Programme of the International Conference "The Legacy of Northrop Frye" held in October of 1992 at Victoria University.
