Letters to Helena Coleman
Madrid, May 29, 1926
… Our sessions end on May 31 and after that I join an excursion to Barcelona and the Balearic Islands in the Mediterranean. Tomorrow I am going on a motor trip to the Guadarama [sic Guadarrama] Mountains, not far from Madrid.
By the eleventh of June I expect to be ready to visit the Pyrenees and to cross into France.... On documents here I am Arturo.
Toulouse, June 16, 1926:
...I came here from Carcasonne [France] ... which is a complete city of the Middle Ages with perfect walls defended by many towers. A new city is, however, growing up outside. I was delighted with it. … I am going on tomorrow to Lourdes, which is the nearest city to the high Pyrenees. I expect to spend a few days among the mountains....
Canterets, June 20, 1926:
...I have had just two days for the high Pyrenees; but they have been delightful. The season is at its best with plenty of sunshine and plenty of snow, with all the rivers and waterfalls full of pale blue water and spray. There are fine cliffs and ragged summits; but no glaciers....I think motor travel could be managed very well in France; and Spain,
too, is possible.... Shall we try it next summer?
