Alaska 1913

Sept. 4, [1913] Yakutat Bay
– Went into Disenchantment Bay to see Hubbard Glacier. Ran on a rock and hung there for 5 hours. Great waves from calving of Hubbard glacier oil. Got off with rising tide after losing kedge anchor. People compared our situation and accident with Spitzbergen. Colours of rocks not so fine and mountains much higher. Strong iceberg waves when large glacier of the ice fell a mile away. Ship rocked terribly on its insescure basis and no doubt damaged plate on each side.
