… Our meetings finished yesterday, in my case with a visit to Down House, Darwin's old home ... then go to the London Northeastern Ry.[railway], starting for Finland. I am to go by Holland, Germany and Stockholm. ... Last night I went to hear Sir James Jeans lecture on the Origin of the Universe.... I enclose a holly leaf and a tiny flower from Darwin's favorite walk near Down House in Kent....
Pajala, Swedish Lapland, Oct. 8, 1931:
… I am writing this on paper bought in the only store of this straggling village 40 or 50 miles north of the Arctic Circle. There is nothing arctic in the landscape. Dull brown fields, stubby birch and spruce trees and a large river - Torneaelv - all under a gray sky with a slight drizzle.... In a couple of days I expect to be in Helsingfors. Finnish Lapland is just across the river from Pajala. ...
Steamer Ulna, Feb. 8, 1935:
I walked for five or six miles yesterday in Kingston [Jamaica] and took a tram ride to Constant Spring in the country.... Tomorrow morning we are to reach Cristobal in Panama.... Had swordfish and breadfruit today. Yesterday at lunch in Kingston my desert was guava with coconut milk....
