GEORGE BAXTER (1804-1867): A Bicentenary Exhibition of Prints and Illustrations
at the E. J. Pratt Library, Victoria University
These superb portraits, which are separate prints of the founder of the well-known lock manufacturing firm and his wife, are the rarest and most valuable of all Baxter's prints. The couple had eight children, who all wanted a portrait of their parents. Photography was not practical at the time, nor was it desirable to commission sixteen paintings; so Baxter was called upon to produce eight pairs of prints. A small amount of hand-colouring was found in the hair.
