VICTORIA, QUEEN OF GREAT BRITAIN, INDIA, ETC.

VICTORIA, QUEEN OF GREAT BRITAIN, INDIA, ETC.

This is the largest and last of Baxter's portraits. It is usually called "The large Queen”. The foundation of the print is mezzotint, like the portrait of Moffat on your left, and in this respect it differs from most of Baxter's plates under his patent, which are generally in aquatint. In parts the print is defective and shows evident signs of the plate having been cut and altered, especially around the foot, floor, and cushion, where it looks unfinished. It was, for the most part, taken from a painting, by Jas. Stewart, R.S.A., and was published about the time Queen Victoria was made Queen of India in 1858.
