A Tourist in Germany
Coleman's geological studies in Germany involved examining regional rock formations and visiting local mines. His thesis was on the "Melaphyres of Lower Silesia," an investigation of paleovolcanic erruptive rocks.
The young student travelled throughout Germany in 1880—1881. His sketchbook shows that he had an eye for the "picturesque." Coleman sketched local markets, churches, rivers, animals, street corners, and castles. These scenes also feature in Coleman's watercolours. (Coleman returned to Germany on a number of occasions. In 1890 - 1891 he spent a year studying at the University of Frieberg. He attended conferences, and travelled with Helena in the early years of the twentieth century. He captured many of the same places in black and white photographs.)
At the end of term in 1881, Coleman travelled to the "North Cape" of Arctic Norway. There he had his first experience of mountain climbing. This was a trip that Coleman later remembered as having stimulated his interest in glaciers. (Please see the Section "Arctic Exploration.")
