Wired Access

In addition to the wireless network, users with laptops can connect to the Internet using wired connection provided by the library. Generally, wired connection is more reliable and faster than the wireless connecton, since the latter relies on radio signal.

Before Connecting

  1. Check your eligibility: as with the wireless network, only U of T students, staff and faculty are able to use the wired access.
  2. Verify your UTORid.

What You Need to Connect to the Internet

  1. A laptop with an Ethernet port. To locate it, look at the left and right side of the computer. It resembles a phone jack.
  2. An Ethernet cable. They are also available at the Inquiry Desk to users with valid TCards or you can supply your own.
  3. A docking port.

Location of the Docking Ports

The docking ports are located on the ground, first and second floor at all carrels and most study tables.

Connecting to the Internet Using the Wired Access

Windows and Mac

In order to access the Internet, you will need to set up a new network profile. This has to be done only once per term.

  1. Turn on your laptop.
  2. Insert one end of the Ethernet cable into the port on your laptop and the other end into the docking port.
  3. Open your browser. You will be redirected to the login page, where you will be required to enter your UTORid and password.
  4. Click Login now.
  5. If you are a graduate student or member of staff or faculty, you will now be able to use the network.
  6. If you are an undergraduate student, please consult the instructions on running the Endpoint Security Policy Test on your laptop. You are required to pass it before you can access the Internet.

Technical Support

We understand that the process of setting up the network profile can be quite challenging. If you require technical support at any point of the process, please visit us at the IT Support Desk in the South Information Commons on the main floor.
