2. How do I get a U of T email account?

The University of Toronto email service, called UTORMail, is available to all students, faculty, staff and alumni. Begin at the UTORid page where you can create an account that allows access to electronic services including UTORmail, my.utoronto.ca, and UTORweb.

For a list of other services available to the University of Toronto community check the listing on the University of Toronto Computing & Network Services (UTCNS) webpage.

3. How can I access my UTORmail account and other electronic resources from my home computer?

You must subscribe to an Internet Service Provider (ISP). There are many ISPs available in southern Ontario. They generally have their own email services. If you use one of these you can still access your UTORMail through any web browser, and access to licensed U of T electronic resources is available via my.access (see also Question 7 below).

The University of Toronto has its own inexpensive dial-up ISP called UTORDial. Check the UTORDial Page for details.

If you are a U of T staff or faculty member, or a graduate student, and need access to UofT's internal network from off campus, you can set this up using UTORvpn. See vpn.utoronto.ca for details.

7. How do I access University of Toronto licenced resources from a non UofT service provider (ISP)?

Some University of Toronto web sites are restricted to the UofT students, staff or faculty members and can only be directly accessed when connecting from a UofT internet address.

The following are recognized as a UofT internet addresses:

  • Computers at the University of Toronto
  • ResNet (Victoria University ResNet Services)
  • home computers connected by the University's dial-up internet service UTORdial, and
  • computers using the U of T's special Bell Sympatico High Speed Edition (HSE) connection called Megabit Access

If your internet service does not provide an internal U of T internet address, you can easily access licenced resources using the my.access service.

This service requires you to enter your library barcode and your PIN (the last four digits of your student or staff numer) to access licensed resources. The first time that you use a licensed resource during a browser session you will be promped to type these numbers in. You can then continue normally, with no further logins required.

If you do not know your PIN, you can have it sent to you via email, by visiting the page:

http://eir.library.utoronto.ca/myaccess/getpin.cfm

The most up-to-date information on my.access is kept at:
http://www.library.utoronto.ca/services/myaccess

For detailed information on my.access go to University of Toronto's My.Access FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) : http://www.library.utoronto.ca/services/myaccess/faq.html
