Lelah Ker was the first teacher at the Canadian School for Missionaries' Children. The school opened on March 9, 1909 in a small Chinese building on So Hung Chiao Street that also served as a church. There were five pupils.
The corner stone for the New School was laid on Friday December 17, 1916 in the grounds of the West China Union University, with the grand opening of the school on Wednesday September 11, 1918.
