Biographical sketch

Ronald Gordon Nudell Bates (1924-1995), a poet, literary critic and Professor of English was born in Regina Saskatchewan in 1924. He earned a B.A. (1948), at Victoria College, University of Toronto, and M.A. and Ph.D also from the University of Toronto. The subject of his doctoral thesis was James Joyce’s Finnegan’s Wake. His teaching career was spent at the University of Upsala (Sweden), the University of Toronto and University of Western Ontario. A member of P.E.N., selected publications of his poetry include The wandering world (1959), The unimaginable circus; theatre and zoo (privately printed, 1965), and Changes (1968), and his poems have appeared in various periodicals. He is also the co-editor of works of criticism on Erik Lindegren and James Joyce, and the author of critical articles published in journals and a biography of Northrop Frye (1971). Married to Kirsti Helen Mottonen; his three children are Karina Anne, Peter Gerald and Lisa Lydia.

Scope and content

The fonds consists of typescripts of the poetry collections “The Wandering World,” [ca. 1959] and “Changes,” 1968; manuscripts of articles about Northrop Frye and related correspondence, 1968-1978; and notebook, various manuscripts and published poems and articles, 1953-1979
