Architecture

Architectural forms are a constant subject, as if Coleman were collecting information about the man-made world. In colour he was a literalist, with an impressionistic sense of light, and quite unaffected by the currents of modern art which boiled through the early decades of the twentieth century. His paintings show that he had a good sense of time and weather, if not a sensibility acute enough to catch or convey the humidity and temperature --as artists like Tom Thomson and David Milne at their best are able to do.
